Advice from Dr. George
With fear and uncertainty circulating in the news every day, the best thing you (and everyone else) can do is turn to reliable sources and get educated. Knowing the proper steps to take in each situation enables you to act with purpose and confidence. Of course, the thing on everyone’s mind lately is the coronavirus and the risks it poses.
So, what can you do if you have developed symptoms of Covid-19, or if you were recently exposed to someone with the virus? Here are steps everyone should know regarding the novel coronavirus, courtesy of our Dr. George.
What if you are sick with the symptoms of Covid-19?
If you must leave for medical care, avoid public transportation and be sure to remain at least 6 feet away from other people. Self-quarantine for a minimum of 14 days.
Call Your Doctor
Since most cases of Covid-19 are mild and treatable from home, call ahead to talk with their staff before visiting the office. You may be directed to a lab for testing or have to wait in your car until you can be seen. Seek immediate care if you experience trouble breathing, high fever, persistent chest pain, new confusion, or blueish discoloration of the lips or face.
Designate a “sick room” and stay away from other people and pets in your home. If possible, use a separate bathroom. Cover your face using a mask, scarf, or bandana whenever you leave your room.
Clean Your Hands
Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. This is essential after blowing your nose, coughing, sneezing, using the bathroom, or before preparing and eating food. Additionally, wash your hands after you have touched any items or surfaces outside of your immediate vicinity. Use an alcohol-based sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol when soap and water are unavailable.
A caregiver should disinfect high-touch surfaces every day. These might include phones, tablets, remote controls, counters, dining and bedside tables, doorknobs, and light switches. Avoid sharing personal items like dishes, towels, and bedding.
If you test positive for Covid-19, be sure to alert anyone with whom you have been in close contact. Ask them to follow these guidelines.
